Hair Restoration · Newport News
Hair restoration in Newport News.
PRP is fertilizer for follicles that are dormant, not dead. The honest work is finding out which you have. That work starts with bloodwork and a scalp examination in Newport News near Kiln Creek, not with a syringe. We do not perform surgical hair transplantation — if that is what your hair needs, we will tell you so and say why.
Hair loss attracts more marketing than almost any other concern — gummies, serums, lasers in a hat, subscriptions to all three. So before we talk about what we do, here’s the frame we use for every hair consult: a follicle that’s thinning is dormant. A follicle that’s been gone for years is dead. Everything that works, works on the first kind. Fertilizer wakes up a struggling lawn; it does nothing for a paved driveway. The earlier you start, the more there is to keep — and where a scalp has been smooth for years, we’ll tell you plainly that PRP isn’t what changes it.
First: figure out why you’re shedding
Most thinning in both men and women is androgenetic — pattern hair loss, driven by genetics and hormones (for men, it sits alongside the other concerns we see most, set out on aesthetic medicine for men). But not all of it. Thyroid disease, iron deficiency, crash dieting, postpartum shifts, medications, and autoimmune conditions all cause shedding that looks similar in the mirror and responds to completely different treatment. Treating pattern-loss protocols at a thyroid problem wastes a year you could have spent actually fixing it.
That’s why hair restoration here starts with a conversation and a lab slip, not a syringe. The consultation is free — like every consultation here — and if you decide to move forward, we order baseline labs right then. The labs run through your lab like any other bloodwork; we don’t mark them up, bundle them, or hide them in a package price. You’re paying for the medicine we practice, not a middleman fee on your ferritin.
What the treatment actually is
Your blood is drawn at the visit, spun in a Drucker Boost centrifuge and prepared in Amplifine gel-separator tubes — the protocol is set out in full on our PRP page, because the tube and the spin decide what is actually in the syringe.
Scalp microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries across the thinning zone — aerating the lawn — which triggers repair signaling and growth-factor release in the tissue around the follicles. On its own it has real evidence behind it, particularly alongside minoxidil. $400 per session.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is the fertilizer: we draw your blood, spin it down in front of you, and concentrate the platelets — your body’s own repair-signal packets — then deliver that concentrate into the scalp with the microneedling session. No donor products, no “exosomes,” no mystery vials; it’s your plasma, processed at your visit (more on how we prepare PRP). Microneedling + PRP together: $750 per session, typically four sessions over the first year.
The Comprehensive Hair Restoration Program is the whole medical arc, priced by its parts: free consultation, baseline labs if you’re moving forward, prescription therapy where indicated, a microneedling + PRP series — typically four sessions across twelve months — and standardized photos so we’re judging results against evidence instead of memory. You pay for the sessions you have and the visits you need; labs and prescriptions route through your lab and pharmacy at their prices.
The honest expectations section
PRP is an adjunct with good-but-not-miraculous evidence: it thickens miniaturizing hairs and slows loss for most appropriate candidates; it does not resurrect slick-bald areas, and published results are measured in density percentages, not restored hairlines. It also works best as a team with the boring first-line therapies — minoxidil you can buy at any drugstore for $20, and finasteride where appropriate, which we prescribe and monitor. They belong in almost any hair plan, and yours here will include them wherever they’re appropriate.
Timeline: hair works in seasons, not weeks. Expect nothing visible for the first three months (a temporary shed early on is common and normal — old hairs clearing the runway), early texture and density changes by month four to six, and the real verdict in the twelve-month photos.
When you should see a transplant surgeon instead
We do not perform surgical hair transplantation, and this section exists because a good number of people reading a page like this one should be booking with a surgeon rather than with us.
Transplantation moves follicles. PRP does not create them. A graft takes hair from the back and sides of the scalp, where follicles are genetically insensitive to the hormone driving pattern loss, and relocates it to where the loss has happened. Nothing injected can do that. Where the follicle is gone, it is gone.
See a surgeon if the area is genuinely bald. A scalp that is smooth and shiny with no visible fine hair has lost the follicles rather than miniaturised them. A long-receded frontal hairline with several years of stable loss behind it is usually the same story. Those are grafting problems, and treating them medically for a year first spends the year without changing the outcome.
Come here if the hair is thinning rather than gone. Where you can still see fine, short, wispy hairs across the thinning zone, those follicles are miniaturising and still alive. That is the population where medical therapy has evidence — and it is also the population a careful surgeon will often decline to graft yet, because grafting into an area that is still actively losing hair means chasing it.
The two are not rivals, and plenty of people end up doing both. Medical therapy holds and thickens what is still there; grafting fills what is not. Surgeons routinely want patients on medical therapy before and after a graft for that reason. If you are heading to a surgical consultation, the labs and the baseline photographs from your visit here are worth taking with you.
We take no referral fee from anyone and have no arrangement with any surgeon. When we say go and see one, that is the whole of it.
Questions
Do you do hair transplants?
No. We do not perform surgical hair transplantation of any kind, and we have no arrangement with a surgeon who does. Transplantation moves living follicles into an area that has lost them, which is something no injection can do. If your scalp is genuinely bald rather than thinning, that is a grafting problem and we will tell you so at the consultation rather than sell you a year of treatment first.
Does PRP for hair loss actually work?
For thinning — not bald — areas, yes, with realistic expectations: studies show increased hair density and shaft thickness in androgenetic hair loss over a series of treatments. It works best combined with minoxidil or finasteride, and it maintains only as long as the underlying cause is managed.
Should I see a dermatologist about hair loss?
For scarring alopecias, patchy loss (alopecia areata), or anything diagnostically unclear — yes, and we’ll refer you when the exam points that way. For common pattern thinning, an NP-led program with labs, prescriptions, and PRP covers the standard of care; some patients use both us and a dermatologist, and that’s fine by us.
How is the hair restoration program priced?
By its parts. Consultations are free. If you move forward, labs are ordered at that first visit and billed through your lab, not by us. Treatment sessions are $400 for scalp microneedling or $750 with PRP, and you pay per session. An office visit is only charged when you need a visit that isn’t a procedure. Your total depends on your plan — which is exactly why we build the plan before you spend anything.
How soon will I see results?
Judge at twelve months, get encouraged at four to six. Hair cycles are slow, and visible regrowth in a few weeks isn’t something the biology allows. A small early shed is common and temporary.
Does it work for women?
Yes — pattern thinning in women (widening part, thinner ponytail) responds to the same program, and the lab workup matters even more, because iron, thyroid, and hormonal contributors are more common drivers in women.
Do you sell hair growth supplements?
No. Biotin does nothing unless you’re truly deficient — which is rare — and high-dose biotin can distort thyroid and cardiac lab tests. If a supplement would genuinely help your case, it’ll be because your labs said so, and you can buy it at the drugstore.
